Interesting solutions for DIY problems

Offbeat auto fixes for the DIY road warrior

When needing to fix your car, numerous DIY solutions may be accessible to you. Thankfully, Mike Allen of Popular Mechanics has a few offbeat auto fix-it ideas you are able to use.

Fuse box issues fixes with odd solution number one

Allen uses the example of a driver who had his car drive when traveling. Someone stops, looks at his car and looks closely at the fuse box. The passerby teaches the traveler that fuse boxes in cars generally have the very same kind of fuses in them which means it is possible to just switch fuses. Each fuse is connected to a different electronic function of the car. Connecting functions with their fuses is simple- check the owner manual. Smart drivers will already have this chart on their fuse boxes for emergencies like this. In this case, the fuel pump relay had gone dead. The fuse is changed from something unnecessary on the car right now to the fuel pump slot.

2nd solution fixed with breakfast and diet soda

Hole within the radiator? Allen recommends you crack a raw egg and put it in the radiator. You’ve to do it to the actual radiator. The idea is that the egg white will sink down and plug the hole temporarily. Try your drink if the fluid has gotten low in the radiator. Adding just just a little bit of diet soda without the sugar that would normally clog water pumps is a valid solution. Other drinks you might use are beer and iced tea. Try not to top it off with anything that contains a lot of sugar.

Oil and nature combined again for a 3rd tip

Your automobile gets hurt when on bad roads. If rock meets oil pan, a hole and subsequent oil leak could be the result. But if you’re in rough country, you can discover the solution out there. Allen suggests a twig could be able to plug the hole. Using your Bowie knife (you’re within the wild, so you probably have one), whittle it into shape and hammer it to the oil pan puncture. You will have to cut off the end of the stick so that it doesn’t catch on anything and make the problem worse. If there isn’t enough oil left within the crankcase before you fix it, you can top it off with water before continuing. We are told by Allen, “The oil-pump pickup is not on the exact bottom – the remaining oil will float on top of the water”. You need to only do this if there is absolutely no other option. If you are able to very easily walk to a store and buy motor oil, that’s the more desirable option.

Offbeat auto fix No. 4- Cleaning up that gas tank hole

This is a variation on the last problem, but this time Allen discusses a hole within the gas tank. When you have a bar of soap on hand, carve a chunk out of it. Hammer the hole-sized chunk in and get to town as quickly as possible. You’ll be much better off if you stay away from using “Dukes of Hazard” as an example by siphoning gas. If you can’t get your hands on fuel, get ready to either push it or leave it behind and hike to the closest garage.
