Cinco De Mayo Coming Out – Chely Wright

Country music performer Chely Wright has officially announced herself as a lesbian. It’s been a story buzzed about for weeks – a country music professional planning on coming out on Cinco de Mayo. People.com broke the story two days early, though – meaning Chely Wright is in the headlines early. Tomorrow, one day before the announcement was intended to come out, Chely Wright has both a book and a music album coming out – possibly she needs some debt relief.

Chely Wright coming out ahead of schedule

The publicist for Chely Wright, Howard Bragman, had been carefully orchestrating Chely Wright’s coming out. May 5 had numerous interviews scheduled for Chely Wright – Larry King Live, Access Hollywood, The Today Show, and more. Each and each one of these interviews had been scheduled very carefully – ensuring Chely Wright’s identity was not revealed until Cinco de Mayo. Two days earlier than the scheduled story, though, People.com broke the story.

The country music career of Chely Wright

In 1997, Chely Wright was named Top New Female Vocalist by the Academy of Country Music. In People Magazine in 2001, Chely Wright was also named to the “Most Beautiful People” list. In 1999, Chely Wright’s “Single White Female” make it to the top of the country music charts. Since then, though, the Country music world hasn’t seen much of Chely Wright. On May 4, Chely Wright’s record “Lifted Off The Ground” and book “Like Me” are both scheduled for release. The release date of Might 4 is being kept for both the book and the album.

Chely Wright’s reasons for coming out publicly

Coming out is a very personal decision — so why is Chely Wright choosing to make it so public? In the past, Chely Wright has said that she simply does “not want to be the first” country star to come out of the closet. Seems like that Chely has changed there tune, though. Her book and her interviews have both included a description of why keeping her sexuality a secret was so essential in the traditionally conservative country music scene. It is true that country music fans might react badly to Chely Wright’s coming out, but it is now very good news that she can be living her life openly.
